Harmonized Sales Tax (HST 12%)
Effective July 1, 2010, British Columbia combined or "harmonized" its Provincial Sales Tax (PST) of 7% with the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 5% thus establishing the new single tax - the HST of 12%.
For the film industry, the HST is RECOVERABLE, similar to the GST.
As well, the film industry sectors that have a high indirect PST content should benefit substantially from harmonization. For example, HST on most services, from set construction, supplies, post production, equipment and studio rentals will now be recoverable. These savings of tax by businesses that provide goods and services to the film industry may result in lower prices of goods and services to the industry.
